HOW A CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONER WORKS
Remember that three electrical circuits are used in many air conditionings: the 230-volt Supply which feeds the air conditioning compressor and condenser fan motor in the condensing air conditioning; a 115-volt circuit for the air conditioning blower motor and control circuit; and a 24-volt control circuit. When the air conditioning thermostat contacts close, a 24-volt circuit is completed to the coil of the fan relay and to the contactor in the condensing air conditioning. When the fan relay contacts close, they complete a circuit to the high-speed winding of the air conditioning evaporator blower motor. When the contactor coil is energized, the heavy contacts close and start the compressor and the air conditioning condenser fan. Two refrigerant lines connect the evaporator coil with the condensing air conditioning. The large one is the "suction" line, carrying heat-laden vapor back to the condensing air conditioning; the smaller of the lines is the "liquid" line, carrying high-pressure liquid refrigerant to the evaporator coil. When it reaches the evaporator coil assembly, it will pass through capillary tube (contained within the evaporator housing) before entering the coil itself. The chilled air is carried into the house by ducts, often the same ones which carry beat in the winter. In many newer systems, the, lines connecting the two parts of remote systems are recharged and sealed at the factory. Connecting the couplings breaks the seal, but 0-rings hold the refrigerant charge inside, this is a split-system or remote air conditioning. Check to see that air conditioning filter is clean; check to see that evaporator fins are not blocked or bent; check for evaporator icing condition—may result from either of above or from operating under low ambient temperatures (below 70°) Finally, place a thermometer in the room or rooms which are ail conditioned. Under most conditions, 76 to 78 degrees is considered JIN the minimum temperature range. You'll find that at 80 and 82 degrees you'll be plenty comfortable when the outside temperature is in the 90's. Even though refrigeration equipment manufacturers are working overtime to develop means of squeezing every possible BTU per watt of power consumed, until there is some still unforeseen breakthrough the maximum possibilities for economical usage of air conditioning lie with the user.
