Disposal Switch

People tend to forget about the little detail of the switch. The installation of the switch, however, can cost more than the disposal itself. A wall switch may be the first choice, but there are other less-complicated options:
a)         Batch feed disposal: You fill the disposal with whatever, close the lid at the strainer (and then back it out a quarter turn and the unit turns on. Run the water.
b)         Common continuous-feed disposal: This is controlled by a switch that is typically mounted on the wall behind the sink. However, to minimize costs, it can also be mounted under the sink right behind the cabinet door.
Special sink-top switch made by the manufacture. This is a nonelectrical push-button air switch that mounts right on the sink itself. A little hollow air tube goes from the switch to a power module box under the sink. The module plugs into an always-on receptacle outlet. The disposal, in turn, plugs into the module under the sink right behind the cabinet door.

Disposal Plumbing

The plumbing for a disposal is normally a simple affair. Remove the sink strainer, install the disposal support ring, and then mount the disposal onto the ring. The hard part, if any, is plumbing the output of the disposal into the existing sink drain. This should be done before the sink trap. Do not plumb in a separate trap for the disposal. The second sink bowl and the disposal should share a trap.
Uneven bowls sometimes pose a problem. Always try to mount the disposal oil the highest bowl. You can mount the disposal oil the low bowl only if the disposal's drain can make it to the trap without going uphill.

Running a dishwasher drain into a disposal is simplicity itself. Every disposal comes with a pipe sticking out of its upper side, which is meant to attach to the dishwasher drain hose. Inside this pipe is a thin plastic knockout that has to be punched out if a dishwasher is being added. Simply insert a screwdriver into the disposal pipe opening and hit it with a hammer. You will feel the knockout break away. There are no plumbing pipes to install. The only problem you might have is if the dishwasher drain hose and the disposal input pipe are two different diameters for this use a coupling device (available at all plumbing supply houses), which can serve as an adapter to join the two different diameters.
