DRYER TROUBLESHOOT
PROBLEM: The dryer drum doesn't rotate when the dryer motor is running.
This problem indicates that the drive belt has snapped. A dryer usually has one or two belts. To find out how many are in your dryer, raise se the top of the dryer and shine a flashlight along the sides of the drum. If you spot a split belt, it confirms that you will have to replace a single belt. If you don't see a belt at all, your dryer is the type that has two belts located in the rear of the dryer, behind the motor and drum.
To install a dryer single belt, follow these steps:
1. Disconnect the dryer from its electrical supply. If you are working on a gas dryer, close the shut-off valve on the gas-feed pipe behind the dryer.
2. If the lint screen is inserted in the top of the dryer, take out the screws inside the lint screen housing. Remove the screen.
3. Slip a putty knife under the top of the dryer, about two inches from a corner. To release the clip, push in on the putty knife as you lift tip on the corner. Do the same at the other corner to release the other clip. Lift the top and it back against the wall. Do you see the single belt If it's lying alongside the drum, proceed to step 4. If you don't see a belt, close the top and proceed to step 5.
4. Use a nut driver or screwdriver to remove the screws holding the front panel of the dryer.
If there is a toe plate, remove that also. If the toe plate is held by a clip instead of screws, use, a putty knife to spring it free. Place a block of 2 x 4 lumbers under the drum to keep it level. Retrieve the broken belt. Place a new belt of the right size for dryer around the drum. The old belt probably left a mark on the drum, so if you place the new belt within the boundary of this mark, you will place it in the right spot. At the motor, form the end of the belt into a loop. Slide the belt under the idler pulley and around the motor pulley.
5. If the dryer drum is driven by two belts, remove the rear panel. You will notice that one of the belts probably extends from the motor pulley to an idler pulley. The other belt extends from the idler pulley to the drum pulley. Release the idler pulley tension spring, and remove the old belts. Attach new belts and reconnect the tension spring. (Note: It is advisable to replace both belts even if only one has snapped. The other belt has probably sustained enough wear that it too will soon give way.)
