Preventing Electric Oven
Element Failure
To keep elements of an electric oven from failing prematurely:
1. Never place aluminum foil under the oven bake (bottom) element. Foil traps heat, which can reach a level too high for the element to sustain.
2. If yours is not a self-cleaning or continuous-cleaning oven, wrap aluminum foil around the elements when using an oven cleaner. If the chemical gets on an oven element, it will cause the outer protective tube to break down. This will result in rapid deterioration of the wire inside the tube and premature failure of the element. Don't forget to remove the aluminum foil after oven cleaning is done.
GAS RANGES AND OVENS
Safety Precautions
Observe these two safety precautions when doing repairs to a gas ovens:
• Turn off the gas. Find out where the main gas valve is located (usually close to the gas meter). If you smell gas, turn off the gas supply to the home. If you think the leak is coming from a gas-fed pilot, and you attempt to make the oven repair, you will have to close this valve before making the oven repair, and then reopen it to restore the gas supply in order to check results. If you again smell gas, turn off the supply until you call have a check made by a utility company or independent oven repair technician.
• Disconnect electricity if you are working on oven electrical components. If your gas oven has spark igniters rather than gas-fed pilots, and you are going to replace one that has failed, remember that a spark igniter is an electrical component. You must turn off all electricity to the oven before you start to replace the faulty spark igniter. This repair should be attempted only if your oven is equipped with no sealed spark igniters. Non sealed spark igniters are not encased but are positioned in a bracket that you can unscrew on the oven.
RESETTING AN ELECTRIC OVEN THERMOSTAT
PROBLEM: Even though you follow the correct cooking times carefully, food comes out of the oven either undercooked or overcooked. Consistently undercooked or overcooked food is often the result of a maladjusted oven thermostat. You can check the oven thermostat by using all oven thermometers. Place the thermometer in the center of the oven, set the temperature control to 4W degrees, turn on the oven, and allow the oven to heat until the indicator light goes off. Record the thermometer reading, Wait for the oven indicator light to come on and record the thermometer reading. Do this three times. The average reading should be between 390 and 430 degrees. If not, you will have to reset the thermometer. Follow these steps:
1. Pull off the oven temperature control knob. Look for an adjustment mechanism on its back. If present, it will be in the form of a dial. Loosen the screw holding the dial and turn the dial the number of notches necessary to bring the temperature to the desired level. Each notch represents a 10-degree advance after making the adjustment and tightening the screw, check the oven temperature with the oven thermometer again. Continue with this procedure until the oven temperature falls within the normal range.
2. If there is no dial on the oven knob, the adjustment mechanism is inside the shaft on which the temperature control knob sits. Insert a thin screwdriver into the hole in the shaft to engage the adjustment screw. Holding the shaft with a wrench, turn the adjustment screw to increase or decrease oven temperature. Each one-eighth turn usually increases or decreases oven temperature by about 25 degrees. After making the adjustment, test the oven with the thermometer again to determine whether the desired temperature has been reached. If the test shows that you have turned the screw in the wrong direction, make the adjustment again in the opposite direction.
