MORE ABOUT YOUR REFRIGERATOR

Your refrigerator/freezer was probably your most expensive appliance purchase. It is also the most expensive in terms of energy consumed over the course of a year. The most common repairs your refrigerator is likely to require are easy to make, which means there will be little if any disassembling of the refrigerator.
Safety Refrigerator Precautions
The following important safety precautions must be observed before attempting any of the procedures:
• Disconnect the refrigerator freezer from the electrical supply. You must make sure that the power is disconnected before you begin work on the refrigerator. This is particularly important when attempting to deal with refrigerator problems, some of which may have resulted in flooding around the base of the unit. Water is an excellent conductor of electricity, and to avoid a serious and potentially fatal shock, you must be sure you are not standing in water around the base of a refrigerator still connected to a live electrical line.
If the outlet into which the refrigerator power cord is plugged is accessible without moving the refrigerator, and there is no water underfoot, remove the plug from the outlet. If the outlet is behind the refrigerator, or if there is water in the area, first switch off the appropriate circuit breaker in the house or apartment's electrical service panel. If your home has fuses rather than circuit breakers remove the appropriate fuse and put it into your pocket. Do not simply loosen the fuse. A loose fuse can become just tight enough to restore electricity. Or someone passing the panel can restore current to another outlet on the same line by tightening the loose fuse, not relight that you are working in some other of the house on an appliance connected to the same line. To be doubly safe, before begin to work, move the refrigerator away from the wall and remove its power-cord plug to the outlet. Now you can work with confidence.
•        Arrange to have someone help you move the refrigerator. Trying to maneuver a heavy refrigerator freezer by your self can cause an injury to your back or elsewhere.
•        Read cautionary notes on all tools or devices you may have to use in making refrigerator repairs or applying a preventive tip. Refrigerator manufacturers have learned over time of the risks their products pose if used improperly. You can reduce these risks by reading the advisory labels carefully.
•        Protect yourself against injuries caused by products or tools that inherently pose risks. For example if you are going to use dry ice to store food temporarily wear heavy gloves and a long-sleeved shirt to keep the ice from touching and burning your skin.

Refrigerator Premade Ice-Maker Water Lines

Premade ice-maker water lines are more expensive than running copper tubing pipe, but they have so many advantages, I recommend them. Copper tubing (X in. outer diameter) costs about $20 per 50-ft. roll; premade lines cost twice that. Premade nonmetallic ice-maker water lines typically come in 104 lengths, but lengths up to 20 ft. are also available. The premade lines save you:
a)       The challenge of installing thin copper without kinking.
b)      The difficulty of creating compression ends that won't leak.
c)       The worry about active water eating away at the copper over time.
Premade Ice-maker water lines install faster and eliminate the need to create compression ends, which occasionally leak.
Do not plumb the fridge ice-maker water line in areas that might freeze such as an exterior wall, attic, or crawlspace. Such lines are small in diameter and will freeze rapidly.

For premade ice-maker water lines, the diameter of the drilled hole in the floor behind the fridge (and all other holes) has to exceed the diameter of the compression nut on the pipe end, not just the pipe.
