LEARN ABOUT YOUR WASHER

REPLACING A WASHER BASKET
PROBLEM: Washer leaks have developed in the basket of your washing machine.
To replace a damaged washer basket (or agitator), you first have to take out the washer agitator. To proceed, do the following:
1.       Unscrew the agitator cap by turning it counterclockwise. Large adjustable pliers may be needed to remove the cap. If the washer agitator is held to the shaft with a nut, remove the nut.
2.       Try to lift off tile agitator. It should come straight up, held it place on the shaft by vertical splints. If it won't budge, screw the agitator cap back on, but not all the way down. Leave ½ inch of space between the washer base of the cap and the top of the agitator. Fill the washer basket with hot water and let the agitator oscillate back and for few minutes. Drain the water, turn off the washer, remove the cap and try to lift the agitator. Caution: Wear heavy rubber gloves to keep water from scalding your hands.
3.       If the agitator still won't loosen, let it sit in the hot water for 30 minutes. Then turn on the washer to the drain cycle. After the water drains out grasp the washer agitator along its bottom edge and rock it from side to side as you try to lift it of the agitator shaft.
4.       If the agitator is really stuck. Squirt penetrating oil around the crown of the agitator. Allow 50 minutes for the oil to work down the shaft. Then tap the washer agitator with a rubber or wooden mallet. Get your fingers around the bottom lip of the agitator and lift it off the shaft.
5.       Finally if you find it impossible to remove the agitator you will have to resort to a hammer and chisel. With the chisel held in position so that it will make vertical cuts in the agitator, strike the crown of the chisel with a hammer. Eventually the agitator should break open. Now, in addition to the basket, you will need it new agitator.
6.       Once the agitator has been removed, release the screws holding the basket. Lift out the washer basket.
7.       Use a stiff bristle brush and hot water to clean deposits from the washer agitator shaft.
S. Apply a thin layer of silicone lubricant to the shaft. Install a new basket, and then the agitator.

REPLACING DAMAGED WASHER WATER-INTAKE HOSES

PR0BLEM: The cold or hot-water-intake washer hose of your washing machine begins to bulge or leak. Replace defective hoses as quickly it’s possible, or you will have a flood if one should break unexpectedly. Note: If one washer hose starts to leak, replace them both, since you can be sure that will other hose will soon fail. Here's how to do it:
1. Shut off the water.
2. Unscrew the hose from the water faucet by unscrewing the ferrule (the female cuff in the hose).
3.       Unscrew the other end of the hose from the washer water-intake valve.
4.       Buy replacement washer hoses that are built to withstand the pressure and temperature of water flowing into a washer.
5.       Install the new washer hoses, but do not over-tighten them.
